Voodoo.

Hello,
Finally I've found my religion. Visual, practical and all embracing. Good God, I think I might be at peace. Voodoo rocks.

Look!

Look!

Look!

My question for you this evening is, what would you place on your altar or shrine and why?

Pretty interesting stuff in the second link. The attitudes towards homosexuality in particular. I shall report back on the contents of my shrine when I've read a bit more.

I liked the jokes, they said never let it be said we don't have a sense of humour, now laugh at these 2 jokes or your blood will flow over Ganuwabbe.
I'm paraphrasing of course.

Voodoo's good if you like re-animating the dead.

But if putting black-magic curses on George Bush is more your thing, I'd recommend Shamanism.

I'd put a cat on my shrine, but it would probably run off.

I would place photogrphs of Alex Harvey in such a shrine. In the hope that I become possessed by his demonic genius alky arse........

A mate of mine, his wife's from Haiti, and he's got numerous stories (100% true, he's adamant) about some of the weird and scary things that those voodoo guys can do.

Am I right in thinking Voodoo is a mystery religion? (i.e. nothing written down you have to find someone to tell you what it's all about)

Oh dear, I suppose I'll have to come out of the broom closet one of these days....

Okay, on my altar I have a papier-mache statue of Mary, kneeling, which was part of a Nativity set on clearance, and for many years, as I rejected Christianity, I used her as an icon of a sort of personal Goddess. I was trained in Ceremonial Magic, and High Wicca (the formal, must-be-in-training sort as opposed to the DIY stuff you see nowaday). I have a background in various religious studies, and have studied Hinduism and Sufism, to name some which appealed to me. Have also studied Buddhism, which did not. Right now, my spiritual life being mainly neglected, my altar is covered in dust. It's got various Catholic things on it, as I reverted to that for a while there. A lovely religion, were it not for the priests and Popes and rules. Okay, altar, besides the dust there's a black cast-iron cauldron, a pottery chalice with primitive frogs (my totem animal) on it, a rosary, a bell, two oil lamps, an incense burner, some Lourdes water (don't drink it), um, more dust... and about 300 more items underneath the altar, just in case of need. I have bought a thrift-store wicker hutch to use as my new altar, I just haven't got around to cleaning it and refinishing it. I am a slack bastard who spends too much time reading blogs.

Blogs are dangerously addictive. I might start an online shrine so I can feed my spiritual side whilst keeping an eye on the world of blogging. I'm movng towards a DIY religion, heavily influenced by Voodoo practice but encompassing aspects of most of the major world faiths. I agree with you about Catholocism, like all organised religion it is often treated as a career rather than a calling. That said the art, architecture and ritual is wonderful. Just ignore the bad bits.
